Doris Anna Shimanek

Doris Anna Shimanek (nee Edlund) died on April 5, 2007 at Oaknoll Care Center in Iowa City, IA. Doris was born March 31, 1918, in Minneapolis, MN to Oscar and Emma (nee Erickson) Edlund. She had two brothers, Alvin and Chester. After graduating from high school and receiving a degree in nursing she worked as a registered nurse in the Minneapolis area. She married William R. Shimanek on July 4, 1959. They resided in Oxford Junction, IA where William was an insurance agent and Doris worked in Maquoketa as a nurse. Doris was active in the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in the community. After they retired, William died in 1981 and Doris continued to live in Oxford Junction until 2000 when she moved to the Oaknoll retirement community. Her parents and brothers are deceased. She is survived by six nephews (Richard, Robert, Ronald, Don, Dennis, and Kevin Edlund) and their families. She is also survived by one niece Mrs. Don (Diane) Jensen (nee Edlund) and her family in MN. Doris is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ray (Anna) Kramer (nee Shimanek) who resides in Stillwater, MN. Many of her nieces and nephews by marriage reside in Iowa and Minnesota. Doris passed away after battling cancer for a number of months. Per her wish, no memorial service is being held.
