Lucille Marie White
Lucille M. (Lucy) White, 77, of Columbus Junction, Iowa, died Friday August 25, 2006. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday August 29, 2006 at the St. Josephs Catholic Church in Columbus Junction, Iowa. Survivors include her daughter Jill (Brian) Masonholder of Columbus Junction, IA and son David (Linda) White of West Liberty, IA; four grandchildren Cristin (Tony) Wellington of Conesville, IA, Andy (Abby) White of conesville, IA, Ben Kaalberg of Columbus Junction, IA, and Travis White of Iowa City, IA; on great granddaughter Libby White of Conesville, IA. She is also survived by on brother and four sisters. Lucy was born June 19, 1929 in Cascade, IA to Michael F. and Celestine (Faber) Kurt. She married Roger C. White January 28, 1953 at St. Marys Church in Cascade. He preceded her in death on November 23, 2005. Lucy was employed by Iowa Electric Light and Power and Sears Roebuck in Cedar Rapids. She later drove school bus for the Linn-Mar School District in Marion. Roger and Lucy moved to Columbus junction in 1995. They wintered at Happy Trails Resort in Surprize, Arizona. Lucy love and played sports her entire life. She was a first team All-State selection in basketball and held the state girls record for most points scored in a game. She accepted an athletic scholarship to the American Institute of Commerce in Davenport and was a starter when AIC won the national title in 1942 and 1943. She traveled internationally with the team as U.S. goodwill Ambassadors. After graduation at AIC Lucy played AAU basketball and softball for Cedar Rapids Merchants helping the team capture the State Class A softball title. Lucy was inducted into the Cedar Rapids Softball Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Iowa State Girls Softball Hall of Fame in 1986. Lucy took up golf in 1973 and recorded two Holes-in-one. She was twice the Ladys City Champ in Columbus Junction. In 1991 Lucy participated in the Arizona State Senior Olympics where she collected four gold and three bronze medals. She also enjoyed tennis and bike riding. Lucy was a member of St. Josephs Catholic Church of Columbus Junction. She was preceded in death by her husband Roger, parents, brother Faber, and an infant brother Joseph. A memorial has been established.
