Thomas H. Mann, 76, of Swisher, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 24, 2005 after a courageous battle with brain cancer. A celebration of his life and a Requiem Mass will take place Monday, June 27 beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, Cedar Rapids, presided by the Rev. Paul A. Fuessel and the Rev. Thomas S. Hulme. Arrangements provided by the Cremation Society of Eastern Iowa and military rites by Marion American Legion Post No. 298. Friends may visit with the family at a lunch following the service. Tom is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Helen; his children Marcia (Herb) Musser of Swisher, Jeff (Mary Ellen) Mann of Cedar Rapids, Carl (Jane) Mann of Nashotah, WI, and James (Jennifer) Mann of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren, Jennifer (Branyon), Elizabeth (Ryan), Julia, Stephen, Justin, Erin, William, and Dominic; his two sisters Betty Baxter and Barbara Berdahl; his many nieces, nephews, cousins, and his former son-in-law Jim McDade and his wife, Mary. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Christine Mann; his sister Rose Mary; and his brothers John and David Mann. Tom was born May 6, 1929 in his parent''s home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was a graduate of Roosevelt High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College and Coe College. He married Helen Louise Shipe on September 6, 1953. He served his country during the Korean War and again in 1961-62 when the Berlin Wall was built. He was a member of the American Legion, Hanford Post #5. A life-long member of Grace Episcopal Church, he served as acolyte, Sunday school teacher, choir member, vestry member, and was Senior Warden for many years. He also served on the Cursillo Secretariat of Iowa as Treasurer, he was a past board member for the "Walk of Emmaus" Community of Cedar Rapids, and shared his faith in Jesus Christ as a lay witness on several Faith Alive weekends. Tom was self-employed between 1966 until his retirement in 1992. Tom and Helen owned and operated "Tom Mann Trucking" with the help of his sons until the business closed in 1995. Tom and Helen shared many adventures and travels throughout their married life. Tom was an honest, patient and trusting businessman, a devout Christian, and was generally admired, respected, and loved. His greatest joys were his family, his faith, and his many friends. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and HE WILL BE GREATLY MISSED! In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Grace Episcopal Church, the Neuro-Surgical Department at University of Iowa Health Center, or St. Luke''s Hospice.
