Dorothy May Alt Parker

Dorothy May Alt Parker, 93, died Friday July 8th at her Gladbrook residence. Dorothy was born to Charles F. Alt and Ida M. Darby Alt on November 25th, 1911 in Topeka, Kansas. They moved to St. Joseph, MO, Brighton, CO, and ending up in Des Moines, IA when Dorothy was in the 8th grade. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1928 and Grinnell College in 1932. She taught school in Ankeny, IA where she met Lawrence A. Parker. They were married June 20, 1936 and lived in Winterset, IA for a year. In 1937 they moved to Rockwell City, IA where Dorothy taught high school mathematics and girl’s physical education full time during World War II. They moved to Oskaloosa, IA in 1947 and to Iowa Falls, IA in 1949. In 1952, they moved to Storm Lake, IA, where Dorothy was the financial secretary for the United Methodist Church. She went back to teaching full time in 1956 at Rembrandt, IA. In 1962 she began teaching typing and algebra in Storm Lake. She retired from teaching in 1975. Several years after Larry’s death in 1989, she married Thaddeus K. Fillipiak on April 11, 1992. They lived in Orange Village, OH until his death in 1995. Dorothy moved back to Storm Lake in 1996 and then to Gladbrook, IA in 1999. Dorothy was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, PEO, Church Women United, and other bridge, sewing and book clubs. Her parents, two brothers Charles Robert Alt and Donald Darby Alt, and a son, Arthur Parker, preceded her in death. She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Carolyn and Stephen Moe, and two grandsons, Christopher A. Moe and his wife Andrea, and Jeffrey D. Moe and his wife Erika, and one great grandson Zachary. Memorial services will be held at the United Methodist Church of Gladbrook, IA on Saturday July 30, 2005 at 4:00P.M., and the United Methodist Church of Storm Lake, IA on Sunday July 31st, 2005 at 4:00 P.M. Burial will be at the Buena Vista Memorial Cemetery, Storm Lake. Memorial contributions may be sent to or designated for the United Methodist Church, Gladbrook, IA, the United Methodist Church, Storm Lake, IA, or Cedar Valley Hospice, Grundy Center, IA.
