Calvin Ray Hershner
Dear Dorothy and family, We wish we could attend the memorial services for Cal today, but we cannot do so because of other obligations. We were sorry to learn of Cal's death. We have many fond memories of Cal when we had many occasions to be together and work together in AARP and the Iowa Retired School Personnel Association. We remember what an excellent unit president he was in the Cedar Rapids Unit when he invited us as co-presidents of IRSPA to attend a meeting. Cal was a very warm, friendly and talented person with a great sense of humor. He did so much for others, and he is greatly missed. With our deep sympathy, Craig and Marian Downing
Dear Hershner family, I'm very sorry about your loss. I had Mr. Hershner at Kennedy, he was my social studies/history teacher in 1986. He was a kind teacher who was able to make me laugh. He was a teacher that I had during my first semester at high school and I remember being very nervous about being in high school. It seemed like such a big transition but he made sure we all understood that as long as we kept up on our daily work, we'd do fine. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Dear Hershner Family; What a wonderful memorial service to a wonderful man! Harold Wilkinson
"The penalty that good men pay for not being interested in politics is to be governed by men worse than themselves." -Plato Cal's life embodied Plato's statement. He and I spent hundreds of hours putting up yard signs, knocking on doors, lobbying politicians. In recent years, I met him at Nea's annual conventions, and was glad to see that he continued to be an activist for his union and for progressive causes. He was one of the best men I've ever known. I'll miss him, as will the world.
We are so sorry to hear about your loss. May God Bless and comfort you during your time of grief. You all are in our thoughts and prayers.
Phil, Sue and the Hershner family, Keeping you in our prayers.
Dear Phil, I know you loved your dad dearly and will miss him greatly. We will be praying for you and your family as you walk through this difficult time. May God's peace sustain and keep you! Love, Tye and Judy Male
The Heritage Agency and seniors have lost a true advocate. I have lost a dear friend. Surely, Cal's spirit is soaring with the angels today. My deepest sympathy. Liz
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Whenever someone close to me passes away, I like to read Rev 21:3-4. I hope it will comfort you as well.
I met Cal when I first started working with the Heritage Area Agency on Aging. I was providing staff support to the Linn County task Force on Aging and the Heritage Advisory Council Government Relations and he was the chair of the task force and serving on the government relations committee. When he concluded his service as chair to the task force I gave him a note that I had written thanking him for his guidance and support. He began to cry after he read the note. I always felt we had a special bond. I always admired his commitment to the environment and his gentle nature. I will miss him. Please accept my deepest sympathies for your lost. Love INGRID
