Joan O'Connor

Joan Avis O’Connor, 84, of Marion died unexpectedly on Monday, August 14 at her home. Per her request, there will be no services.

Joan was born January 10, 1933, the daughter of Rex and Joanna (Stanley) Smith, in Iowa City. She graduated from City High School in Iowa City, and went on to attend Coe College, graduating with degrees in both history and teaching. In August of 1951, Joan was married to Bernard O’Connor.

For twenty-seven years, she taught elementary school in the Cedar Rapids Community School District.  She was a dedicated teacher who had a tremendous rapport with her students, many of whom have stayed in touch with her over the years.

Her love of her grandchildren was immense. Joan delighted in all of their activities and proudly discussed their accomplishments.
Survivors include her husband of sixty-six years, Bernard O’Connor; daughter, Chris Collie of Berwick, Victoria, Australia; son, Jim (Lynn) O’Connor of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Deanna (Adam) Hatcher, Tracey (Ian) Cavanagh, Laura Collie, Mackenzie (Brad) Kaspar, Callie O’Connor, and two great-grandchildren, Bryce and Chloe Hatcher.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Richard and Stanley Smith, and son-in-law, Peter Collie.

The family would like to thank Dr. Melanie Stahlberg and her staff, for their loving care over the years.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Sisters of Mercy, 1125 Prairie Dr. N.E. Cedar Rapids, IA 52402 in memory of Joan.
