Gary Simon

Gary Simon, 80, of Waukee, Iowa, went home to be with the Lord on Veterans Day Tuesday, November 11, 2025, following a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s and dementia.

Born in Des Moines to Mary Simon, Gary grew up in Des Moines and graduated from East High School in 1963. Shortly after, he proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as a fireman until his honorable discharge in 1967.

On May 19, 1969, Gary married the love of his life, June Russell, beginning a devoted partnership that would span 56 years. After completing his military service and being honorably discharged, Gary worked faithfully in a variety of roles over the years, ultimately retiring from the Maintenance Department of the West Des Moines School District.

Gary found joy in simple and meaningful moments—fishing, spending time outdoors, and most of all, being surrounded by family. His gentle spirit, steady presence, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Gary is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, June; two sons, Aaron (Chantel) Simon of Waukee and Eric (Crystal) Simon of Pella; grandchildren Nathan Simon, Katie (Gavin) Tatar, Emily SimonCarson (Mackenzie) Simon; bonus grandchildren Chaybrin (Tom) Puryear, Cabria (Hamzan) Olsen, Ciana (Jason) Olsen, Blayne and Trenton Shawler; and great-grandchild Bailey Simon and Cerilia Puryear. He is also survived by his brother, Tom (Kathy) West, of Waukee.

He was preceded in death by his son, Mark Simon, his mother Mary West, and his grandparents Thomas and Buelah Simon.

A graveside service honoring Gary’s life will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter on Friday, November 21, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend.
