Lawrence D. Potter Jr.

Lawrence D. Potter Jr., 72, of Calamus, IA left us Thursday, April 24, 2025, at Allure of the QC, in Moline surrounded by loved ones. Per his wish the rite of cremation will be accorded, and a Celebration of Life will be held at the riverfront he loved so much come early summer.

Skip, as he was affectionately known, was born July 7, 1952, on a naval base but as he told the story, he was born on a naval ship, hence the nickname, to his parents Lawerence Potter Sr. and Mary Lou (Meier) Potter. Muckrat was another nickname of his from living on the mucky Wapsipinicon River. The oldest of seven children, he was raised in Davenport and was a very adventurous child, always testing his parents’ patience right from the beginning, following his dad around base. Many stories were told of his escapades to his delight. Skip loved his family and was often the disciplinarian that every relative was threatened with if they did not behave. He was tough and very meticulous in the way he did things right down to the way he cooked, savoring every flavor to the fullest. He enjoyed cooking and trying new recipes, sharing what he liked with others. He loved his life and often spoke of the times he had, traveling for work and taking in the world as he went about. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking, grilling and just generally being outdoors and working with his hands.

He was a computer gamer too. World of Warcraft was his game and he was always talking with his friends online from all over. The stories they would tell each other, roasting each other in the game. Many hours were spent just gaming and being on his computer.

He was an electrician by trade, having retired from Nichols Aluminum after 35+ years only to suffer a stroke not long after which kept him homebound. He made the best of it though and spent these last years doing what he liked, online shopping and telling stories to those who came to see him, along with spending time with his son, Logan.
He is survived by his children, Daniel “Logan” Potter, Steven Potter, Cary Lamaack, Tara Newport (Chadwick), grandchildren Whitney (Derrick) Lange, Jarrett, Alex, Walker, Fisher and Gunner Lamaack and Madison, Jackson, Rilee and Conner Potter, brothers Joe Potter (Lisa), Mark Potter (Cheryl), sisters Donna Potter-Suskey and Susan Briggs along with a host of many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and extended family and friends, those who cared for him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter Tiffany Potter, siblings Daniel Potter and Linda Potter and son-in-law Garrett Lamaack.
