Michael (Mike) Lynn Kiester

Michael (Mike) Lynn Kiester, 73, of Altoona, passed away Wednesday, September 27th, at Taylor Hospice Care in Des Moines.

Mike was born December 16, 1943, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He graduated from Altoona High School and received his Teaching Degree from William Penn University. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Tokheim, in October 1963. He began his teaching career in Carlisle, as an Industrial Arts Instructor and boy’s basketball coach. He enjoyed building homes during summer break from teaching. He went on to teach in Craig, CO, Camanche, SE Polk, and Bondurant, IA.

After retiring from his teaching career, Mike and Mary pursued their love for antiques and opened an Antique Shop in Mitchellville. Having always enjoyed camping and travel, they began traveling the states in their motor home and spent the winters in Texas.

Mike was an avid sports fan; particularly football and basketball. He also enjoyed playing cards and spending time with friends and family.

Mike is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary (Tokheim); two sons, Todd (Cindy) of Clinton and Tyler of Brownsburg, IN; four grandchildren, Jane, Claire, Trent and Summer; Brother, Mark (Karen) and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Moana and sister, Minhon Adair.

A memorial and burial service of cremains will be held at the Old Altoona Cemetery on Saturday, October 14 at 10 am.
