Scharron Clayton
Scharron Ann Clayton was born March 22, 1947 in Cleveland, Ohio to Thelma and Lester Shy. She departed this life and joined her mother and father in heaven on Sunday June 11, 2017.
Scharron attended John Adams High School in Cleveland, Ohio. She completed her undergraduate degree at Central State University in Wilborforce, Ohio. While in college Scharron pledged and joined the sisterhood of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. She later received her doctorate from the University of Iowa in Counseling and Human Development.
Scharron began her career as an educator at Alabama State and later the University of Iowa. While at the University of Iowa she taught courses in the Medical School and the School of Education, she also served as the coordinator and director of health care opportunities. In 1991 she became the Assistant Dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts and an Associate Professor of the Afro-American Culture and Civilization at the University of Northern Iowa. She served as Assistant Dean and later Associate Dean until 1997. During her career, Scharron served as Acting Head for several departments. Scharron taught many courses on issues related to race and women’s equality. In addition to her career as an educator Scharron hosted a weekly radio show on KGGB. She later served as a member, chair, and most recently as President of KGGB. Scharron served the Waterloo community on the Equity Advisory Board of the Waterloo School District and the Black Leadership Committee in Waterloo. Additionally she served on the Governor’s Commissions on the Status of Women and the Status of African Americans.
Scharron married the love of her life, Webster N. Clayton III in October of 1986. She later gave birth to her son, Webster N. Clayton IV. While Scharron was successful professionally, those that knew her best knew she was most proud of her family. Scharron’s love and compassion for people served as light wherever she went, impacting everyone around her. She will be missed but never forgotten
Scharron is survived by her husband, Webster N. Clayton III, her son, Webster N. Clayton IV, her siblings, Twila Shy and Vincent Shy, and nieces and nephews, Tracey White, Jasmine White, Dorian Shy, Charonda Caver-Foster and September Shy.
Scharron’s memorial service will be held on June 24, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Antioch Baptist Church in Waterloo, IA. An additional service will be held in her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio at a later date to be determined.
