Lola Miller

Lola Miller, 77 of Iowa City, earned her angel wings on July 18, 2017 at The Bird House in Iowa City. Following Lola’s wishes she has been cremated and there will be no visitation. 

Lola May Asby was born August 7, 1939 in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Howard and Frances (Hedges) Asby. She was raised in the Mediapolis and Mount Pleasant areas. On November 24, 1966 (Thanksgiving Day), Lola married Merlin Miller in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Lola worked for Washington County Hospitals & Clinics as a Certified Nurse Aide for 19 years. Previously, she worked as a beautician in the early 1960’s. She enjoyed baking and was known for her brownies, dinner rolls, and raised sugar doughnuts. She was a loving, caring, and devoted wife, mother, and friend.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Merlin of Iowa City; daughter Denise Miller of Boone; son Chad Miller (fiancé Jennifer Ekeh) of Spring, TX; sisters Ellen (Owen) Julius of Millstone, NJ; Zora (Pat) Troiani of Houston, TX; brothers Rodney (Shirley) Asby of Alburnett; and Roger (Nancy) Asby of Lockridge. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Lola is also survived by “special” granddaughters Shelli (Smith) Marin, Stephani Smith, and Sammi Jo Smith and close friends Joan Watson and Leona Opperman. She was preceded in death by her parents, her step-mother Martha Asby, and one sister (Elsie Asby).

The family would like to give special thanks to the Mercy Hospital in-patient hospice staff; Hospice of Iowa City; and the wonderful staff and volunteers at The Bird House in Iowa City.

Services will be held on July 22, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the Columbus City United Methodist Church in Columbus City.  A luncheon will follow at the Masonic Hall in Columbus City. Private family burial will take place at Kossuth Cemetery in Mediapolis, Iowa at a later time.
