Gary L. Poppe

Gary L. Poppe, 75, of Waterloo, formerly of Hudson, and most recently Traer, died Thursday February 9, at Ravenwood Specialty Care in Waterloo of Cancer.

He was born April 30, 1941, in Waterloo, son of Eddie L. and Selma (Birkholz) Poppe.  He married Karen Fliss on August 18th, 1962 in Waterloo.
   
Gary graduated from Hudson High School in 1959.  Gary was on the Hudson Volunteer Fire Department, retiring after 20 plus years.  He retired from Holmes Welding after 38 years, of which, the last twenty were at the shop in Traer, Ia.  He most recently worked the University of Northern Iowa Maintenance Department and retired to take care of his wife Karen.
   
Survived by:  a daughter Melissa of Davenport; two sons:  Eddie (Linda) of Hudson and Bill of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren Natalie, Spencer, Preston, and Caitlyn Poppe, all of Hudson.  One brother Larry (Brenda) Poppe of Waterloo.  Four brothers-in-law, Norbert Fliss (Mary Anne Reisinger) of Waterloo, Ron Fliss of Cedar Falls, Robert Fliss (Pam Trenkman) of Tucson, AZ, and Michael Fliss (Harriet) of Spirit Lake, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
   
Preceded in death by:  his parents; his in-laws, Charles W. and Lillian (Bahl) Fliss; two sister in-laws, Jeri Denny and Mary Ann Fliss, in infancy, a brother-in-law, Gary M. Denny, and a niece, Terri (Fliss) Schall.
   
To Respect Gary’s wishes, there will be no public wake.  A private family inurnment will take place at a later date in Hudson.  Iowa Cremation is in charge of arrangements.
   
Memorials:  may be directed to the family.
   
Gary enjoyed attending annual welding conventions, going to flea markets, doing many woodworking projects in his garage, and reading and watching his Westerns.  He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and his four grandchildren.
