Virgil Smith

Virgil "Virg" Smith, 83 of Waterloo, Iowa passed away Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017 at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg, Wisconsin.  A celebration of life will be announced in the future.  Memorials may be directed to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Virgil was born July 9, 1934 in Ventura, Iowa, a son of Clyde and Grace (Groen) Smith.  He attended school in Ventura as his family farmed in the Clear Lake Ventura area.

Virgil enlisted in the Army in 1953 and was honorably discharged in 1955.

On January 10, 1959, Virgil was united in marriage to Myrna Stoltenberg in Mason City, Iowa.  They were blessed with four children, three boys and one daughter.

Virgil obtained a BA in math and science while attending the University of Northern Iowa.  He earned a MS in science from St. Mary University in Winona, Minnesota.

He spent his career teaching math and science in the Waterloo School system (33 yrs). He was an adjunct instructor for Upper Iowa University (15 yrs) and the University of Northern Iowa (10 yrs).

Virgil moved his family to a farm North of Waterloo in 1973.  He was an avid outdoor hunter and fisherman who enjoyed the natural beauty of Iowa, Minnesota, Arizona and Canada on his numerous trips.  He loved to see things grow and to help people succeed. 

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Jean Smith of Madison, WI; three sons, Joe (Carol) Smith of Seattle, WA; John (Jodi) Smith of Eldridge, IA; Jason Smith of Madison, WI; grandchildren, Holly, Lauren, Marin and Kye; brothers, Russell (Bobbie) Smith of Cedar Falls, IA; Michael (Betty) Smith of Ventura, IA; sister-in-law, Rakel Smith of Clear Lake, IA; brother-in-law, Kim McCraken, of Cincinnati, Ohio.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Virgil is preceded in death by his parents; wife; sisters, Frances Rabe, Vivian McCraken, brother-in-law, Barry Rabe; sister-in-law, Grace Smith; brothers, Kenneth and Donald.
