Richard Galen Schellin

Richard Galen Schellin, 94, of Marion,  passed away of natural causes on June 4, 2017, after a week-long stay in Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Donalee (Howe) Schellin; two daughters, Kristine Stark and Marita Stewart; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; and a sister, Dot Wehling of Anamosa. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Carl Schellin and Hazel Daisy (Clark) Schellin; sisters Eloise Thomsen and Leona Glenn; and a brother, Vernon Schellin.

Dick achieved the rank of sergeant in the US Army, serving from 1942-46 in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre as an anti-tank gun crewman. He was very proud of his service and was a member of American Legion Post 0298. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge 548 in Marion, Iowa.

Dick retired as a machinist from Rockwell Collins after 35 years. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, and playing cards with his brothers-in-law and friends. He was a craftsman who left a legacy of handcrafted birdhouses and wooden toys, and he took very good care of his family and home. In his later life he spent many summer mornings fishing on Lake MacBride with his neighbor Dick Jacobs.

We are very grateful to Hospice House for their days and nights of comfort and care. Per Dick’s request, a service will not be held; a private family inurnment will take place at a later time.
