James "Jim" Sherman

James “Jim” Sherman, 69, of West Des Moines, passed away on Sunday, February 28, 2016 surrounded by his family. 

Jim was born in Des Moines, IA to Eldon and Marian (Taylor) Sherman October 15, 1946. He grew up on their farm south of Stuart, IA and graduated from Stuart Community School in 1965. He attended Simpson College before beginning work at Little Giant Crane and Shovel in Ankeny, IA.  In 2001 he moved to Rushford, MN where he worked as a Mechanical Engineer for Badger Equipment.  He retired in 2010 and returned to the Des Moines area.

Jim enjoyed cars and all things mechanical. In his younger years he liked to work on cars and later became a fan of racing.  He also enjoyed fishing, especially with his boys, and watching Westerns. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him his greatest joy.

He is survived by a brother, Everett (Linda) Sherman of Rockwood, TN. His children: Lori Heiser of Blue Springs, MO; Scott Sherman of Des Moines and Jeff (Gina) Sherman of Stuart, IA.  Step children: Heather Winter of Des Moines and Heidi (Lynn) Moyer of Spirit Lake, IA.  Nine Grandchildren: Andrew (Sarah) Mills of La Vista, NE; Matt (Debi) Heiser of Las Vegas, NV; AJ Heiser (Alyssa Chandler) of Blue Springs, MO;  Cody Sherman (Michelle Kollasch) of Urbandale, IA; Alysha Sherman (Jamie VanZuuk) of Waukee, IA; Megan (Cahlen) Brancheau of Ankeny, IA; Logan Sherman of Stuart, IA; Olyvia Sherman of Des Moines; Ella Winter of Des Moines. Seven Great-Grandchildren: Mikayla and Ryder Heiser; Evelyn and Alexander Mills, Joseph, Letti and Lila Sherman. Many Aunts, cousins, nieces and friends which he cherished.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and parents.

A reception to celebrate Jim’s life will take place from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, March 3 at the Wallace Building (formerly Napa Building) in Stuart, IA. At Jim’s request, a private family burial will be held at a later date.
