Verlyn Beck

Verlyn D. "Bud" Beck, 90, of Cedar Rapids died peacefully Sunday, February 5, 2017 at his home.  The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Matthews Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 10:00 am.  Iowa Cremation is in charge of arrangements.
 
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jean (Jean); a daughter, Cynthia (Bruce) LaMotte of Chicago, Illinois; a son Gary (Nadia) of Reno, Nevada and a sister, Marilyn Adams of Delhi.  He is also survived by two grandchildren, Christina (Donald) LaMotte-Sorota and Tatiana (Glenn) Coleman; and three great-grandchildren, Lauren Mayerle, Makena Sorota and Bennjamin Coleman.  He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lee Ray, Robert and Donald and a granddaughter, Renee Mayerle.    

Bud was born on April 13, 1926 on a farm near Olin, Iowa, the son of Edward S. and Bertha Baughman Beck.  He graduated from Springville High School.  Bud enlisted in 1943 and served in the US Navy Amphibious Asiatic Pacific Campaign in the Philippines on a LCT during World War II.  He married Mary Jean Ward on October 15, 1949 in Marion. Bud was the parts manager at International Harvester Trucks and later Hawkeye International for 42 years, retiring in 1991. 

Bud was a member of the American Legion,VFW and Ostomy Group.  He was a volunteer for Mercy Medical Center, American Cancer  Society, Alzheimer's Association, and the Veterans Clinic of Cedar Rapids. 

The family would like to thank Mercy Medical Center, Veterans Clinic, Hall-Perrine Center, Hospice of Mercy and all others who gave him such great care. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bud's memory to Mercy Foundation; the Sisters of Mercy; or the American Cancer Society.

To some, he was Verlyn, but to most, he was Pud, Bud or Mr. Beck.  He will live on in the hearts of all those who knew and loved him.
